Hello need some advice on how to restore the body of this 1843 officer Kurrasier. You can see that it is/was nickel plated and it’s badly rusted through. Previous owner sanded the body but not the visors. This incongruency leads me to think that it should be polished to match and to read it of the rust and last bit of plating. Any thoughts or ideas on how to proceed be much appreciated

A very nice old helmet. This helmet was not originally nickel-plated. Nickel-plated helmets didn't come around until after about 1880. So remove that coating or whatever it is and polish the helmet.
i am in charge of the militaria collection in a museum. there is an m1843 officer who unfortunately got chromed about 30 years ago.

nice though…. Would be great to see photos of the uniform and helmets at the museum.

The Koller is for enlisted men, nice Kammerstück, but converted to look like an officer. Sadly. Epaulett from Regiment Nr.4 with painted underlay.

Its too late for reply (at least 2 years) but:
a bit knowledge about galvanic coating:
Nickel
1. In 1842/43, Böttger managed to deposit useful nickel coatings from solutions of nickel-ammonium sulfate in Frankfurt am Main. From this bath, Roseleur in 1849 was able to cover plate (flat) devices with good nickel coatings.
In meantime was introduced many american/british patents concerning nickel plating process.'
But:
2. In a German institute, the nickel plating process was introduced by W. Pfanhausersen. Already in 1878, he published his first textbook: "Praktische Anleitung zum Galvanisieren von Metallen" (Practical tips for galvanizing metals).

so i think that your nickel cover is at least late process used to preserve exibition object from rust

Chrom was in Germany very late in use. In industry started to use in 1925-1930

That is a very difficult issue to improve.

May I ask, am I actually seeing a Kürassier helmet with a hinged front visor like an 1400s Sallet helmet? That is astounding.
The M(uster) 1841 hinged visor prototype in the J-L. Larcade binder pages I mailed you Tony 😎. Zeitschrift für Heereskunde original photographs [1959] of this prototype. 27th July 1841. Wilhelm Jäger sends his presentation to the Kriegsminister. Several modifications will be done to this Muster 1841. (This would take me some time to translate). Resulting in the Muster/Pattern 1843 helmet.
-And in the Jan KUBE Militaria.

Here was my nickel plated 1843, the visor was never riveted onto the helmet. It was held in place by screws. I have carefully removed all the nickel plating except for one or two areas for posterity sake. It must’ve been plated later and possibly the felt lining in the rear and now degraded leather/paper lining for the front visor added later. Under the degraded leather liner under the front visor was green paint that seemed original. I don’t know how it could have been nickel plated later with so many other details, not being plated.
