Nice! I have one very similar that came out of a local antique dealer's shop. I'll post it when I'm back from Portugal next weekend

No I think it is just part of making it look cool. There are a few variants out there. Here are a couple of pictures from a quick internet search.

I have one with a different type of eagle on the top. My example has more a "garde du korps" type of eagle on it, if I recall correctly.
This is the first time I have seen this style of eagle on the top of one of these inkwells.

Thirty or so years ago I had one similar to the center picture but it had a bayonet through it similar to the others pictured. Nice addition to your collection, Peter.
