Kokarden and chinstraps used on Bing tinplate haubes

Can members please advise if Bing kokarden are domed and notched as they are on Weissenberger helmets? I have tried standard M91 kokarden together with some spare M91 chinstraps and not only do the chinstrap "notches" not fit over the M91 lugs but there is also insufficient room for both to fit behind those lugs. From this I assume that Bing helmets require special versions of both? STEVE

The width of the post side keys varies depending on many criteria. They are matched to the passage width of the lug.

Infra, 3mm keys, reduced to 2.5 at mobilization to adapt to other post side.


BING chinstraps are special because they have two rivets per slider, a unique feature specific to BING chinstraps. The keys are not hollow and are thin, only 1.3 mm thick (like on most felt Ersatz helmets).

Many thanks for that important detail information Clovis, these are points I have never seen mentioned before. I shall have to start looking for that particular strap.

For once I was lucky and found a spare strap in my small stock of spares - definitely not a Bing strap (no rivets) and probably an older modern copy, but it fits with a copy kokarde and gives me the illusion of what it ought to look like, which will be a placeholder until I get REALLY lucky hunting down the real thing! BING are not Ersatz, because like the Weissenburger Wurtembergeois, they have been the subject of a patent filed and protected, they are of good quality and have been the subject of an acceptance contract by the army. For the BMs, the Bavarian army has officially ordered a number of them.

That is a lovely textbook example of the Bing tinplate Clovis.
By the way, I do appreciate very much the information you have given me on this Forum. I have had a love of learning all my life and thank you and everyone else here for keeping that going!
