My Stahl Helmes

I have had these two examples for decades. They were bought back in the 80's when there was not a great demand from collectors. I have posted these before, probably 15 years or so. My first example ET 64:

This helmet was brought back by a CEF Pioneer who picked it up during the Canal du Nord attack. I bought it from his son who used to wear it on Haloween. :)

I do not know whether the Pioneer shot this individual himself or just picked this up from the battlefield. The helmet has obviously seen a great deal of use. We can see patches of feldgrau, dark green and brown divided by the typical black painted lines.

Rolled rim and heavy paint brush strokes.
IMG_4923.jpeg
The width of the black paint lines varies and obviously a coarse brush was used.

The horse hair pads are missing but the pouches and tape remain. I presume the black varnish splatter is blood. It extends under the liner rim.

A wise old collector friend who lives in New Brunswick, CN once told me that the reason why so many stahl helme liners are missing is because the pads/fingers are allowed to flop around which stresses and breaks the edge of the liner. He told me I should put a ball of cloth or bubble wrap up in the shell to keep the fingers vertical. I have followed his advice ever since. :) My next example is an ET 66 which I will post tomorrow.

Hey Brian, did you apply some of that 1980's R. Stephen Dorsey "Pecard" on the leather liner? :)

Nice authentic camo. (y)

Chuck

Yes Chuck I did. When I bought this in the 80's everyone had clued into the fact that Neatsfoot Oil was destructive and Pecards was recommended by the so called experts. Hopefully, I haven't destroyed the leather. I have not put anything on leather now though for at least 20 years.

My second helmet ET 66:

Condition wise the camo paint on this helmet is in better shape than my ET 64 and of course we have the original leather chin strap. This piece was bought from a local militaria dealer who actually had a store front where you could go and check out his wares. He was ex CN military and had been stationed in Europe where he started collecting stuff to bring back home. He was a smoker and died almost 20 years ago. He used to set up at the MAX and SOS. This is how I learned about the existence of these shows and decided that I had to make the drive/cross the border!

Good colouration on this baby!

This chin strap is not an add on, it came with the helmet and this was why I bought it. The dealer had at least 6 of these for me to pick from at the time. Once he knew that he had a local IG customer on the "hook" pickelhauben started to appear on his shelves! :) However, he was one of those personalities that liked to dick with you once he knew you wanted something in the store. Tony had dealings with him as well back in the day. My Oldenburg Dragoner officer helmet was bought from this person.

The chin strap fittings are painted feldgrau.

ET 66. The leather strap is still quite supple. When I bought it, the strap was up over the bill of the helmet and I left it there for years....it looked cool but during this decade I thought maybe this is stressing the leather so I let it hang loose now.

Congratulations on your helmets Bill, I really like the pattern of the second one with the tan being more predominate.

This pattern is much more interesting to me than most which can tend to all start looking alike.

With the wearing off of the black lines in one picture it almost looks like they were ghost painted. (y)

Hello Bill,

Two great camo helmets. The first appears as though it may have had some lacquer at some point as the green panel on the front looks extras shiny and more so than from over handling. Some collectors or early custodians tended to lacquer helmets prior or collecting becoming more popular. The black appears to be some type of paint but not blood in my opinion. Blood tends to be a darkish brown colour.

The second helmet is really outstanding. A unique design and very untouched. Finding these with their liners is getting harder but to have the strap as well is a big bonus.

Due to concerns about the potential for gas to be expelled from plastics etc over time, I use a piece of card curved into a circle and covered in acid free paper. Not my idea but it works very well to hold the pads nicely against the liner band taking the pressure and weight off them.

Thanks for showing 👏👍

Oh my, sorry Brian, I definitely know that.

Not sure if it was a typo or just that I had my buddy Bill on my mind he is having heart problems and I was just talking to his wife this morning checking on his condition.

Again sorry Brian 🫣

My apologies Brian. I’m still a new here and don’t really know any of the members. Thank you for clarifying.

Lame excuse! LoL.

@All: Digger is a good guy. I'm just busting his chops

@ Brian: beautiful examples. Like Digger I'm partial to the 2nd one as well, but would have either on my shelf

I think we should call you "Billy-Brian". Not quite Billy-Bob but you do spend a lot of time down south.....

Just teasing my US friends. I kind of like hyphenated names.

Our cat Hannah's full name (joke name) is Hannah Joelle Minns-Brown. Joelle is her vet and Minns is my wife's maiden name.
