    S.M.S. Karlsruhe (1916) Tellermütze

Dane: That's a very nice looking example associated with a well known ship. I also like these caps. I posted my Werft Division cap SMS Koenig Wilhelm a couple of years ago now. I'm on the lookout for a nice example to the Matrosen Division to complement it but, they are considerably more...

    The Kaiser’s Prize (Kaiserschiessabzeichen)

Steve: I assume this must have been taken very early in the war given that the award was only to be worn for one year after its award. So, sometime prior to October 1914? Very good photos!

What are common red flags in fake pickelhaubes

To be clear. I'm not suggesting that the helmet be purchased in order to salvage the parts from it and tossing the shell.. What I'm saying is that the value of the parts by themselves make a compelling argument for purchasing it.

What are common red flags in fake pickelhaubes

Depending on the price, I would seriously consider buying it just for the parts. The spike assembly is good, the Wappen looks good and Wappens to the Saxon Dutchies are hard to find. The chinscales are also good. The rest of the helmet is a mess but, that should be the basis for some price...

    The Kaiser’s Prize (Kaiserschiessabzeichen)

Some really great photos of Prize winners in that collection Steve. Thanks for sharing them.

    Prussian Infantry Fahnentrager

Super Photo! Bonus having one of them being a Kaiser Prize winner.

CEF MkI to the 46th Battalion (South Saskatchewan)

McNaughton is an unsung hero. I believe it was McNaughton who because of his Engineering background, came up with the idea of using electrified mosquito netting place at a defined distance downrange of artillery pieces to calculate the time it took for a fired round to pierce the netting thus...

CEF MkI to the 46th Battalion (South Saskatchewan)

Very nice item Peter. I'm just finishing up my history of the 5th Battalion Western Cavalry, 1st Division, 2nd Brigade which was recruited from Saskatchewan. Just a couple of days ago I finalised the Honour Roll. Out of 5,853 men who served with the unit 1,672 were killed. That's the total...

    Kurassier spike

I think it's a good one as well.

    Pre-1911 Prussian Grenadier

Alan: Thanks for the comment. It was a good opportunity to score a Grenadier Wappen on the cheap. Regarding the support plate: These are found often enough to make me suspect that some of them were delivered from the suppliers like that. Poor quality control? Maybe the QM people on the...

    Pre-1911 Prussian Grenadier

Here’s a helmet I picked up at a local on-line auction. I bought it based on the photos which weren’t great quality but the price was right so I’m happy to have picked it up. I essentially got it for the price of the Wappen. Not Kammer marked and the Wappen is not original to the helmet. It has...

    Not seeing much wrong here.

I also noticed the unusual pitting on the spike and the base. I suspect they may be relic items that were assembled post war. Other than that and the the Kokarden issue it looks OK.

Interesting Chart Illustrating Shellac application to Pickelhaube Shells

Yes, Jim was a good guy and a talented artist as well. He and I were the only serious Imperial German collectors in Eastern Ontario and Quebec. We jointly did a couple of displays at the Ottawa Militaria Shows where we had over 30 helmets on display and won Best of Show awards. I have fond...

    Uhlan Regt 13 Music

Very interesting photo. I was wondering how you played the kettle drums while on horseback. The reins attached to the stirrups solves part of that challenge.

Interesting Chart Illustrating Shellac application to Pickelhaube Shells

Tony: Well, that explains it! The collector friend I got it from was Jim Godefroy of Montreal. I seem to recall he threw this in to seal a deal I made with him for a Garde Artillery Officers helmet at one of the Ottawa shows not long before he passed. You did a great job on it.

Interesting Chart Illustrating Shellac application to Pickelhaube Shells

Thanks for your interest. I lived in Peterborough for 5 years and as far as I know I was the only Pickehaube collector in a town of 60,000. I have no idea who made this but it was expertly made by someone who knew what they were talking about.

Did I hear someone mention “miniatures” ?

Incredible. Good thing for us that Eger didn't decide to go into the full scale reproduction business!

    Pickelhauben collection resolution

I discovered it when I purchased a Kaiser Prize document from a German collector who asked for payment via Wise. It was all new to me. It's now the card I take with me to Portugal every winter because you can hold multiple currencies on it and use it as a Debit Card in the local marketplace.

Interesting Chart Illustrating Shellac application to Pickelhaube Shells

I had occasion the other day to scrummage around through some of the stuff we moved when we took up residence on the lake and stumbled across this Chart which lays out the steps followed during the application of shellac to the pickelhaube shell. I had forgotten I had it. Haven't seen it in...
