    Gathering information for first find

Hi Jay, Welcome to the forum! Congratulations on a great attic find. I was writing my reply but Coert already answered :) Pictures of the helmets sides, the inside, and pictures of the inside of the cover can help to identify / narrow down the regiment. Regards, Lars

    Hermann & Kube

Hi Philippe, It does however keep their shop relevant, so militaria buyers will check in regularly. In some other militaria online shops it seems to be the same helmets that have been on offer for many years, and I have stopped checking in on those many years ago. Regards, Lars

Ersatz EM Prussian Pickelhaube - PRICE REDUCED

That box looks horrific, as if they jumped on it  Good to see that the helmets weren't damaged.

    Project: Black Kurassier Metalhelm

    Great improvement; well done!

Shoulder straps - are they original?

Hi, I don’t see any red flags. The stitching looks ok, as does the finish of the “5” shoulder straps. The construction of the crown should be compared with other straps of the same regiment to get an indication of originality. The finish of the back looks uncommon to me, with the cloth of the...

What do you think about the stamps?

Hi Sandy, According to the excellent list of Kammerstempel on Pickelhauben.net (https://pickelhauben.net/kammerstempel-infantry/) the OIR 91 stamp is normal, however I have to say I don't like the stamps of the helmet on Ebay; e.g. the date stamp looks unevenly spaced, the "6" and "9" look...

    Straightening of objects

Hi Clovis, Quite the transformation, well done! Did you move the rivet from the old grommet hole to the top of the helmet? Regards, Lars

Ersatz felt rolled rim silver fittings

Congratulations Bryan, Very nice. I'm no expert, but I imagine this is from the time when some of the metals were getting scarce, and rather than using white metal they used brass with a metal wash. As they went to steel fittings for all helmets pretty quickly, I would date this helmet to end...

    Sold

What a coincidence, apart from looking identical it has the same lighter spot on the left cuff. EDIT: each of the rosettes on the front of the uniform points to the same direction on both uniforms, and the slight deviation from vertical of the buttons is the same too. You can draw you own...

    Where to start.

Fully agree with that! I only collect Pickelhaubes that are related to my family's military history, so for me regimental association is more important than quality. Having said that, if you are not sure which direction you want to go then collect quality, as that will always remain tradable...

Real or fake - what do you think about this chinstrap?

Hi Sandy, I'm watching this one too :) The title on Ebay is "éléments blancs", which I interpret as "white metal", which seems fitting for the last two pictures but not for the rest of the pictures where it seems more like brass. It seems the sliders have been moved, so the leather doesn't lie...

    new member

Welcome to the forum! A lot of info here on helmets, but also on uniforms, little bit less on organisation and equipment. Where I live there isn't a lot of militaria to be found either, but the internet has provided me with some very nice buys. Do you have a particular area of interest? Regards...

    First helmet

Hi, Congratulations, I still remember my excitement when I got my first Pickelhaube! Can you post some pictures of your helmet? The addition of repro cockades and chin strap will make the helmet look better, and probably cost you less than 75 USD (as opposed to 350 USD ++ for originals)...

    Pickelhaube identification

Found a picture on Flickr of the Hessian Leibgarde regiment with the same type of Litzen as visible in your photo, according to the caption before conforming to the Prussian style of Litzen. Not sure why that photo was taken in München though......

    M1864 - deciphering markings

Hi, I think that is an italic "R" in front of F.C., meaning "Reserve". Regards, Lars

    Pickelhaube identification

Very nice, seems to fit all the details. The Litzen on the collar look a bit different, but that might be due to slight changes over time (how wide are the Litzen, how visible is the line within the Litzen), or he might be wearing his own private purchase uniform (Eigentum) for the picture, that...

    My Great Grandfather Paul Ulbrich

Hi Paul, What a super find! He probably would have had an identical Stein. You can edit your post and fix any typos :) Regards, Lars

    Pickelhaube identification

Hi, Not that knowledgeable on these early helmets but with some help from Kaiser's Bunker I think this is an M1842 or M1856/57 Pickelhaube. Born 1838 means he probably did his military service around 1858, fits with both models (the Germans were very thrifty, and used superseded models long...
