    Hessen Leib Helmet and others

Thanks Clovis, The tombac compositions you show all have a (very) high in copper content, hence the redness, but I think that the Bekleidungsordnung is referring to the golden-coloured tombac for the 1895 Wappen (which is why red Wappen are very rare 😀) Regards, Lars

    Hessen Leib Helmet and others

Hi Clovis, I think almost all M95 Wappen were made of Tombak (this applies to the brass-coloured Wappen only of course :) ). In the German language Tombak is not necessarily a reddish brass, rather it is defined as brass containing a certain amount of copper (more than 67% according to...

    Great sword!

    Hessen Leib Helmet and others

This seems to happen quite often on these high quality helmets, and as it would be easy to prevent, could this be a “fashion” issue? Regards, Lars

    2 Pickelhaubes on eBay

Bargains can still be had on Ebay, but you need to decide quickly whether it's good or not because it will be gone soon. Just last week I saw an M15 Sachsen Pickelhaube for sale, without the Kokarden and the chin strap, but in good reasonable condition with a 2-part Wappen, buy-it-now price 570...

date of death on death card

The date is just the publication date of the Verlustliste, not the date he was officially declared dead. It took typically 3-6 weeks from being killed to being published in the Verlustliste, but sometimes much longer.

    New Prussian Artillery

My last entry, should have posted it all as one. FAR 62 was raised on 25.3.1899, so maybe the screws on the Wappen are due to this being a private purchase helmet rather than being an older model? Same for the liner.

    New Prussian Artillery

Hi Peter, FAR 62 was in X. A.K. in 1914, Stab and I. Abteilung stationed in Oldenburg, II. Abteilung stationed in Osnabrück. Not sure to which Abteilung the 4. Batterie would belong. Source: "Führer durch Heer und Flotte", Friedag, 1914. Even better when there is a family connection. Regards, Lars

    New Prussian Artillery

Hi Peter, Very nice helmet :) "Ostfr." is the abbreviation of "Ostfriesisches", as in Ostfriesisches Feldartillerie-Regiment Nr. 62, the only "Ostfriesisches" regiment I could find. Regards, Lars

Prussian 10th Hanoverian Jäger Enlisted man Tschako - Model 1915

Hi, The shell might be ok, but the Wappen looks fake to me (mind you, I'm no expert). The very short distance between the holes for the Wappen looks strange, never seen that before. Regards, Lars

    One of my dumber purchases

Thanks for sharing Gabe, It is really well made & aged, not illogical to think it could be real. I've bought a couple of fake items in my time, but luckily none of them high value; I'll see if I can find some pictures. Regards, Lars

How to prevent leather shrinkage of helmets

Hi, I don't think you can prevent the leather from shrinking, although you probably slow down the process by keeping the helmet in an environment with stable temperature and humidity. I strongly recommend not to treat the leather with any products, I have seen the results of that after many...

    Pickelhelm

Hi Yaro, Welcome to the forum. The Pickelhaube seems to be in a reasonable condition, untouched, nicely stamped, but as mentioned it's missing some (expensive) parts. There is typically a big price difference between online militaria dealers and Ebay, so not so easy to arrive at a reasonable...

    M15 Helmets

Hi Colin, Looks like "1913" to me, fits with the black leather liner; would have had silver/brass fittings initially, converted to field grey at some point in time (either during the war or afterwards). The spike looks ok to me, not the first I have seen that is not super "pointy" :) Regards, Lars

Hi Patrik, Probably in the “Ranglisten”, of which I have none. Regards, Lars

Silver plate, rememberance of a fallen Major during WW1

Hi Patrik, Very nice plate. Imo it is a parting gift to an officer from the other officers, either because he transferred or retired. Why do you think he fell on the battlefield? Regards, Lars

Prussian Pioneer enlisted helmet, recent O.V.M.S. Ohio show find

I have a postcard of L.I.R. 53, sent from the field 5.5.1916, showing a buckled and broken visor trim, so rough handling at the time also has something to do with it. Regards, Lars
