I am pretty sure that vent spilt pin was a post war add on. The vent hole goes through to the shell and the novice collector thought it was missing a split pin so he added one.

Yes indeed great pic. Back then I would hate to be the guy carrying the chin straps. Constantly having to pick up the ones that drop on the ground in transport. Thanks for sharing this great pic !
