    RESEARCH is KEY

I was just on a militaria collecting community on reddit because I was curious as to what other collectors were up to when I stumbled upon a post that was quite concerning. Some poor soul paid $500 for this monstrosity before asking for advice: This is just a reminder to new collectors that...

Having trouble identifying exactly what this is.

The file just has to be smaller. I always try to upload images directly from my phone, but I get error messages. So I just take a screenshot of the image and crop unnecessary bits and it works just fine.

New pick ups from the last few weeks!

Hey Dane! I totally forgot to get that photo I promised you! This is a late Qing Dynasty Oxtail Dao Saber, which, based off of its crude construction, seems to be a locally forged sword.

M1 helmet dad has gifted me

Original WWII shells had a cork texture which I’d say was “chunkier” than the “sand” texture used on Korea/Vietnam War helmets. WWII M1’s also typically had shiny stainless steel rims that formed a seam in the front of the helmet. Chinstrap bales of early M1s were fixed, but around 1943 they...

M1 helmet dad has gifted me

Technically, he overpaid just a little. But since it was a gift from your dad, I’d say it’s priceless now!

M1 helmet dad has gifted me

Pea green paint, sand texturing, manganese trim, rear seam and swivel bales all point to this being a Post-WWII era helmet. This type was used through the war in Vietnam all the way to the mid 1980s. As the others have said, the liner is original from WWII. Helmets should be fine displayed on...

New pick ups from the last few weeks!

Again, great haul, Dane! I too have recently acquired several items including things such as a Qing dynasty sword and ACW Confederate snake buckle, but I didn’t bother to post them because they aren’t related to any 19th/20th century European Empires haha

Hi Wojtek! What is the alcohol to old varnish ratio you use for this method?

    Baden Griffen Wappen.

Pickelhauben are made of leather which shrinks over time. I think that’s why there is seemingly no space for a crown.

Just a Small Find - French Aiguillette End from The 1812 Campaign

Yep, from what I’ve seen, prices range anywhere from $450 for a relic (if you get lucky), up to $1000+ for one in good condition. It can get quite expensive!

Just a Small Find - French Aiguillette End from The 1812 Campaign

Thank you! I’m starting to venture into the realm of miscellaneous relics to supplement my First Empire button collection. I hope to piece together a full set of original shako scales someday, and maybe pick up an original shako plate as well.
