    Retouched pictures and postcards

Do you have any pictures that where obviously retouched? This is a colorized version of a well known postcard. Evidently the artist thought that spiked helmets without spikes just do not look right. Below is the original b/w version that I linked directly from Joe's Article.

    GMGA Feldrekrutendepot in Alexinac

It is difficult to keep up with Joe who keeps posting great GMGA pictures. This is the depot in Alexinac that was established for these units. The writer confirms the location, although misspelled. The depot was opened around May 7th, 1917. It comprised personnel for training, medical care etc.

    Scroll Helmet Article

It looks to me like 249 to me. The first two digits are more clear on the close-up of the man at the steering wheel, while the third digit is partly visible on his shoulder flap which is curled up.

    Scroll Helmet Article

Quite an understatement! Excellent pictures :D Concerning IR23 it was not in the area. It's location can be tracked over the 12th Inf. Division (Short Overview). IR33 does not seem to have been there either, only FAR33 would be a possibility this unit was in Macedonia. Does the right man's...

    Shoemaker

Nice card, although I would not let a shoemaker restore any of my helmets! "Our cheerful cobblers shack 1901 In memory of the training area Alten-Grabow. Reached Magdeburg again this morning (?). Greetings, your brother Hermann."

German Company Numbering - How high does it get?

FYI, Busche states the following about RIR229: * Established in Breslau and attached to 50. Res.Div * Comprises three battalions formed from the Ers.-Btl./Gren.R.Nr. 11 and IR Nr. 51 * Commander was Oberst z. D. v. Bercken * Battalion commanders were I.: Hauptmann a. D. Graf v. Roedern, II...

    New Purchase needs some help

Hi, Nice find. The distance between the holes may give some clue, not every plate fits on every helmet. It does not look like Saxony to me because the Saxon star usually has narrow mounts. The silver fittings indicate certain units, such as Pioniers. If you want to complete the helmet then the...

    Tropenjäger

Well really not, I'm just picking up some clues.. It is a bit difficult to track that division, at first it was called the "Zusammengesetzte Division v. Hippel" and later numbered the 302nd division. The sources differ quite a bit when you look at the details. During mid-1916 the...

    Tropenjäger

Kanatlarci is briefly mentioned during the 1918 retreat ("Weltkriegsende an der Mazedonischen Front", green book). There seems to have been little change in the months before, so the 302. Div. probably was in the area in late 1917 too. I have no chart of that division (anyone?), but there is...

    Red white and… dark blue?

Joe, is there a picture? Would white/red/blue fit for Schaumburg-Lippe?

World War One explained in terms of a bar fight...

Actually Austria swings first but Serbia ducks and Austria crushes its hand against the wall. Then Russia starts to look over. Germany thinks that Russia will complete its drink before joining in so Germany tries to punch down France quickly and then turn around to Russia. But Russia jumps up...

    Bayern Raupenhelm

Can you remove the Raupe for a look at the underside? It seems rather fluffy (much like some sort of fur) although these pieces were often replaced in later years for presentation.

    Helmet display/stands

I like glasses too because they are unobstusive and do not detract from the helmet. Also you can see through them and they are available in every size you need. Last not least, if you are in a squeeze and need glasses for unforeseen guests, you know where to look.

    Scroll Helmet Article

Hi, it appears to be identical with this helmet: http://www.hermann-historica.de/auktion/hhm59.pl?f=NR_LOT&c=6239&t=temartic_M_D&db=kat59_m.txt I had a look at it at the Hermann Historica auction but I did not hold it in hands. The helmet already was on Weitzes Site in 2008 (see this...

    Bavarian Bürgerwehr

Looks like a fine modell 1853 OR helmet to me but it will be difficult to complete the missing chin scale.

    What's that badge?

One guy suggested Georg von der Marwitz. In that case the boy could possibly be Adolf-Heinrich von Arnim who was his grandson and a tank commander in WWII, which is pure speculation of course. Heinrich von Arnim aged around 90..

    What's that badge?

Yes the bumps are characteristic. I'm asking around in a few German forum sites maybe someone can help.

    What's that badge?

.. Generalleutnant Friedrich von Schippert (1858-1924)?

    Jaeger zu Pferde Reserve Batallions

Do you have information about which Reserve regiments existed? It seems there were at least two, Hermann Cron (Geschichte des Deutschen Heeres im Weltkriege) mentions Res.Jäg. z.Pf. 1 and here is a tag from the second (not mine, linked from here):

    Brass Detachable Spike

Do you have a theory about the helmet? There were private purchase helmets with detachable spikes but these were made completely different and evidently this is a line helmet. I don't suppose there might be a makers mark? Oops, I mixed that up because I had just read up my articles and actually...
