    MG08 modified for mountain use

Yes the gun itself is standard, the tripod is a captured french mount that has been modified. I posted this picture in the Great War Forum which led to a series of personal attacks between the contributors :( but the base line is, the gun was cobbled together by a unit for mountain use but...

    STRANGE LOOKING BAYERN PICKELHAUBE

The cockade indicates a later use in the 1930's. The cockade is often the only difference between pre- and post-war helmets. A new plate was designed after the war but hardly used, partially for financial reasons but also because the old plate was preferred for its tradition and style.

    Faux Kugelhelm ... maybe

How about the idea that it is a Kugelhelm, but an improvised cover mad by binding it around the ball point? That does not look like a standard cover and btw it seems to be an ersatz helmet too.

    Saxon neckflap

..any references, opinions? Serrated cockades have been discussed earlier but I never saw this type detachable neckflap. http://www.ebay.com/itm/RARE-1900-GERMAN-SAXON-BOXER-REBELLION-CANVAS-SPIKED-HELMET-/320954894839?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4aba6709f7 However I doubt that the fire...

    Dream Ulan Item

Nice find! If I read it correctly, the plaque says that it was given as a gift at the regiments anniversary. It also tells a name, something like the comrades of the Brigade.. Graf Dohm? Difficult to tell because of the reflections.

    Bekleidungs Vorschrift April 1916

Thanks for sharing! I completely missed this. Note that the regulations also states that the Husarenmütze and Tschako are to use the same model 1916 chin straps. I never saw any of these.

The pigeon has landed–or should I say owl?

Probably a Finanzbeamter (financial officer) - in German there is the saying 'Eulen nach Athen tragen' (carrying the owls to Athen) :D Sorry I could not resist either, any German members will understand my allusion to current politics.. really a nice picture!

    A STRANGE PICKELHAUBE

That sounds like an interesting piece, do you have pictures? Such a mixture did happen I assume, compare this helmet marked 1. FsAR: http://www.aboutww2militaria.com/December2010/pikel2.html

Happy group with unknown headdresses - Balkans?

You mean these guys? I call them the seven dwarfs (number 7 is just taking the picture). The writer calls the hats "Balkanmützen" on the back.

    MG08 modified for mountain use

This seems to be an MG 08 mounted on the tripod of a captured St. Étienne machine gun? On the rear "Geb. M.G." has been written which probably stands for Gebirgs M.G. - mountain machine gun. It would make sense to provide a lighter tripod capable of high-angle fire for the mountain environment...

Happy group with unknown headdresses - Balkans?

Hi all, can you make something of these headdresses? The man to the right has a badge or pin, any thoughts about that?

    Mecklenburg M1842

This looks like a nice early piece but I have the impression that the plate and cockade do not match the rest of the helmet. Also the cockade is on the wrong side for an early helmet. I am not sure about the round visor, not correct for Prussia but I don't know about other states...

    CRÉMERY (AUGUST 11TH 1914)

Hi, I think this was the 7th Chevaulegers Regiment. At the begin of the war, this unit was assigned to the 5. Infantry Division (Divisionskavallerie) but was split up later on.

    Colonial cap-East Africa

He has a strange pricing strategy for a professional seller. He is asking for £885 now after it did not sell for the same amount in US$. Both seems much too cheap if its really original. I had asked him about the eagle and asked for a picture of the eagle's reverse side. He said it is fastened...

    Scroll Helmet Article

They had this frenzy for using upside-down "2"s and "7"s. Maybe a number "7" turned around?

    Interesting photo

The picture was taken during the peace negotiations with Russia, evidently a fraternization right at the front. The writer mentions the barbed wire entanglement at the street Wilna (Vilnius)-Smorgon (Smarhon) as location. Very interesting indeed! September 3rd, 1917 "Beginn der Verhandlungen...

You mean something like.. Did you ever hear the German term "ABC-Schütze"? That is a first grader who is just learning the alphabet.

    Scroll Helmet Article

Nice picture! I assume that the number is either a "1" or a "3". A "7" would not fit into the known scheme (known by me, that is). From my information, the highest of the 'early' unit numbers were GMGA 252-255 which were formed in 1917. Then in October 1918 the Bavarian GMGA units 206-209 and...

    M17 Stalhelm with Camouflage

Very Nice! Concerning the naming it appears to be "Gefr. Heck.", the first probably the abbreviation for "Gefreiter" which is a military rank.

    Bavarian police helmet?

The cockade indicates a post-war helmet. Police helmets from before 1918-1920 had the Bavarian state colors on the left side. Of course the front plate is wrong too.
