Strange MG unit (and some cats)

Now that you point it out.. :D Were these units really sort of free-floating, attached directly to the Generalgouvernement without regimental organization? The list that Glenn provides sums up to quite an amount of men.

Strange MG unit (and some cats)

I got this picture because of the cute little kittys. I always like cats. :D But the stamp made me wonder, it reads 10th MG company of the Generalgouvernement. I cannot make out much in the address line, it contains the word "Landwehrdivision". From what I know, there were three...

A strange black Stahlblechhelm from Baden...

The shell is non-magnetic and there are a few flakes of lacquer missing revealing that the base metal is silver colored.

A strange black Stahlblechhelm from Baden...

Great hemet! The stiching of the chin strap looks odd, normally the parts that go around the post mounts are attached to the middle bars of the buckle. The Saxon Aluminum helmet of mine (see here)is definitely not a lightweight. It is heavier than a leather helmet and not made for special...

    v. Kessel

One point I know about is that he was in charge of censorship. Also he organized public soup kitchens during the famine of 1916 and put down a strike in 1918 with military intervention so evidently he did have executive functions.

    v. Kessel

From what I know, Brandenburg was the garnison for most of the Gardekorps and III. army corps. The new province Brandenburg was established in 1816 from the former Mark plus other territories such as the Mittelmark, Uckermark etc. (thus the historic title). It was not until 1881 that Berlin...

    v. Kessel

I have a few infos about him. He did command the Gardekorps before 1909 although the title on the card refers to the Mark Brandenburg. Besides being the governor of Berlin he also was the "Oberkommandierender in den Marken" from 1909 until his death in 1918 which means that he had administrative...

    Medic with unusual insignia/badges

The badges on the second picture are exactly the same! The young age of the man makes me wonder weather they were maybe issued to lower qualified helpers in contrast to actual doctors. Would originally every member of the Freiwillige Krankenpflege (volunteer medical service) wear the white 1883...

    Medic with unusual insignia/badges

I have not seen this before. Maybe these badges were used as replacement for white Volunteer caps? The card is dated March 21st, 1918.

    Scroll Helmet Article

Addition.. the writing could also mean "gefangene Kolonial-Truppen Westfront". Does the german soldier have Brandenburg cuffs (three buttons sideways) or Swedish cuffs (two cuffs vertical)? I am discussing this with another collector and he added the info that the picture could also show members...

    Scroll Helmet Article

Great picture and the back writing makes it even more mysterious! I had difficulties reading it. The words "gefangene" (captured) and "Westfront" are rather clear, the word left below may be "Russen" but it is written with two "z" which is strange. The top right word is probably the name of a...

    Open season on identification

Nice picture, this thing has no shadow at all, so either it is paper thin or really a touch-up. As it is uniform white, it could have been added to the negative, yet this must have been done with great care you even see the crown. Very interesting!

    GMGA Feldrekrutendepot in Alexinac

I have this one, showing a member of GMGA 249. I could imaging that particularly in a depot private sun helmets were worn as well.
