Looks like the shrapnel on the Bavarian helmet was angled upward when it hit. Either a low burst or the helmet was on the ground. Ricochet? Also agree with Brian, rodents. However, I have a Baden M15 that is mint on the outside and all dried up and stiff inside.

Nice! I have a Saxon infantry officer with a similar spike. Yup... compensating for shortcomings. My helmet would have a very tall spike indeed. ;)
