    Carl Zeiss Binoculars

I just purchased this pair of Imperial Army binoculars made by Carl Zeiss at an estate sale in Ottawa. Based on the serial number and the materials used it’s most likely these were produced around mid-1915. This is a D.f. model in the very popular 6 X 30 version. The optics are really...

The Most Common Pickelhaube: The Prussian Model 1915

The "Handbook of the German Army in War edition of April 1918" states that The Kingdom of Prussia and her allied or subordinate states composed 78% of the Imperial Army. Bavaria 11%, Saxony 7% and Wurttemburg 4%. Some of those subordinate to Prussia units wore a Wapppen distinctly different...

    Mini Pickelhaube Inkwell

As threatened. I took a couple of pictures of my inkwell. It looks like I got the Faux Saxon version.

    M16 Mail home helmet.

That's a nice helmet and a good example of an area of Imperial helmet collecting limited to the USA I believe. British and Commonwealth troops were not permitted to mail souvenirs home. That's not to say that some of them didn't make their way back to Canada. by various non official routes...

    3. Oberschlesisches Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 62

Philippe: Thank you for taking the time to comment. I think you are correct regarding the 3B. The marking is unclear even in the daylight and with magnification. However, the 10 C is quite distinct so given that the unclear digit to the far left is only one character the number must be a 3...

    3. Oberschlesisches Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 62

Wojtek: I am back from my (too short) Winter vacation in Portugal so I pulled what I believe to be my 62nd Regt helmet from the shelf. I say "believe to be" because as you can see in the photo of the rear visor right hand side, the marking is somewhat unclear. I've interpreted the markings...

Higher Civil Official of the Military Administration pickelhaube

Lovely helmet. I have one nearly identical. The sole difference being mine has the officer style two ribbed silver rings on both Kokarden, while yours has an NCO style single ribbed silver ring on the Prussian Landeskokarde. Is there any significance to that?

    Anhalt IR 93 Pickelhaube

Mike: That's a beauty!! I find it interesting that the Anhalt Landeskokarde is completely green. Probably the only state that used a single colour.

Royal Canadian Artillery (RCA) Pre-War Officer's Dress Forage Cap

Great looking Visor Cap and, it looks great as the centrepiece of your display.

Displaying for my old high school

Dane: Good for you. Providing the younger generation with an understanding of The Great War and the subsequent conflicts via artifacts from those wars that they can experience first hand is a commendable action on your part. I try to do the same by doing presentations to local historical...

    Mini Pickelhaube Inkwell

Nice! I have one very similar that came out of a local antique dealer's shop. I'll post it when I'm back from Portugal next weekend 😢

    3. Oberschlesisches Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 62

I have an 1891 pattern enlisted ranks helmet to the 10th Company 2nd Battalion. I'm in Portugal at the moment so I don't have access to it. But I am home in a couple of weeks.

    M95 Prussian Guard Enlisted Helmet

Great find!. I haven't seen a pickelhaube in an antique shop in decades. It's in terrific shape.

    Prussian Officer Spike Helmet 1871

Great purchase. It's an excellent example of the M1871 Prussian Infantry officer's helmet. Whoever wore this must have exited military service prior to the introduction of the Reichskokarde in 1897. With the introduction of the Reichskokarde it was worn on the right side (the traditional...

    Metal Helmets

That metal shako is incredible. I've never seen a written reference to their existence, let alone seen one.

    copper electroformed bird

How true! Access to the reverse usually tells the tale. Although failing that, a "jewelers loop" to examine the obverse is a must in my book.

    Pickelhaube Baden

That's a very good looking officers helmet. The shell appears to be a Vulcan Fibre (Dephag) construction, which is a very early form of plastic. That explains why there aren't any crazing marks that you typically find on the conventional leather and lacquer style helmets.

What an awful way to start my day. I'd been wondering why Steve hadn't been posting as regularly as he had been. I never had the opportunity to meet Steve in person though I wish I had. It would have been such a treat to spend a day with him and his amazing collection. He and I had a...
