Robert R. thank you very much for the donation. I really appreciate your support and that of the other members. I have met a few members at the SOS but it would be so cool to meet everyone. It is amazing that these helmets and other militaria are collected and preserved throughout the world.

Officer Helmet Feld. Arty 10 or 46

Thank you for that extra information Clovis 👍 The pre 1900 liner is in good condition and complete. These liners although less stylish than the coloured silk are much more robust.!My apologies for the poor photo, it had to be taken inside as we have lost access to our balcony area. :( Stitch...

Officer Helmet Feld. Arty 10 or 46

Side view. Carefully removing the spine and discovering an insect nest! This spine has one screw post, one soldered split pin. Some spines have 2 pins. Note also the pre 1900 officer liner with squared fingers. The split pin and tang found on most officer spines. The. liner here is in good...

Officer Helmet Feld. Arty 10 or 46

My next project: Officer helmet from either Feld Arty 10 or 46. This comes with the beautiful pre 1913 wappen with 3 Napoleonic War Bandeaux. A 4th battle honour was added after this year. This helmet has the old style officer liner with leather fingers and no coloured silk. Obviously, this...

    Hessen Train Bn. Officer.

In my opinion, the weave of that cloth is too coarse to be satin. I have worked on an officer helmet with a similar lining. It is more durable than satin or ribbed silk.

My thanks for all the comments and as usual I have learned some new things. I have never seen a stapled piece of visor trim before, that is "new" for me! As to the size and shape/colour of patches, I know that they are black and can be square. However, I was trying for a neater job, more precise...

I finished this piece in the last few days. Some photos: The original plug for the left extra hole had fallen out in transit, this was glued back into position. The mdern glue residue should have beenhidden with a bit of shoe polish but I don't have any with me. A modern leather glue was used...

Stitch holes cleasned out and ready for stitching. Stitching is done with an antique hat stretcher in place. The stretcher as shown is angled so that I can access the stitch line. This helmet was tending to collapse inwards as usual. The stretcher keeps the proper shape for stitching the visor...
