Not sure what it is. It was sold in the auction room I attended too, for more then 50 years now, back in Antwerp. So I bought it over the phone with only thise pictures to judge. It looks like it is embroid but on the other hand, left under the frame there seems to be like a reinforcement strap...

You nailed it with the "frozen in time". Seems to me the best translation to give for the French "dans son jus", even shortened to "jus" when spoke.
