Bavarian Felt Ersatz Tschapka

Hi Mike:

This is a replica. All you really need to do is examine the liner and the contour of the helmet shell. Original Tschapka liner tongues were never rounded, never. The base of the shell should also make a dip behind the ears to cover the occiptal. The eBay helmet is shaped like a baseball cap on steroids. However, it is distressing to see a replica with what appears to be an original chinstrap and Pickelhaube liner. There is no easy way to F-A-K-E age like that.

I saw a Filz Tschapka at the SOS possessing the same characterstics, and it was made so poorly the comically gargantuan mortar would have blown off in a stiff wind.

Originals are pictured on page forty-one of Jean-Louis Larcade's Casques a Pointe, Tome II: troupes à cheval. They look nothing like the eBay item.

Twenty-four bids. More's the pity.

Chas.

Hello. Are you sure it's a replica? I have a felt shapska from U.R. 6 who is stamped from BA XVIII and who, for me, is original... except the linner who is a replacement one. So it's difficult for me to do any comment but all the felt shapska I've seen until now had a linner with rounded tongues... are they all replicas? Can somebody post a picture from a felt shapska with the "standard" shapska linner? The felt shapska where a quick and economic made so it's possible they use normal spiked helmet linner. The shell from my helmet is with the base making a dip behind the ears but when you look at the pictures in Larcade's book or in "The German Army" from J. Kraus on page 385 I'm not sure they all do... The fixing system from the mortar board looks good... Even if I don't have many trust in the seller (who buy me a prussian felt spiked helmet, change the plate and sell it as a wurtemberg one...) I'm not sure it's a copy.

Hello timp_be:

Not having held this specific Tschapka in my hands, I concede it is possible to be mistaken. However, I would never recommend any friend of mine "invest" in one of these.

Compare the external characteristics of the eBay helmet with the Bayern Ersatz Filz from Gary's site:

The pictures are not very good and very great but when you look at the edges from the mortar board, those from the copys looks cuted and black, those from the helmet on ebay are in felt... as wel as I can see! Now, it's normal that replicas try to look as much as possible on the real one!

Looking at Aisne1914's feedback and crossreferencing with 'our friends' feedback you can see that Aisne1914 bought something from him a couple of weeks back. For some reason this purchase is 'private' and you cannot view the item.
