Hello all! Hope ya’ll are well! I have something pretty nifty here that I’m extremely proud of!

Just shipped in from Brühl Germany and my goodness is it gorgeous!

An original 1917 print of Manfred von Richthofen Book, “Der rote Kampfflieger”

Few photos of the interior, I didn’t want to damage the thing, it’s quite frail.

I’m currently having a conservation frame being made for it, UV protective glass and everything.

Ever since I saw a copy of this book in the seattle air museum back when I was 11, knew I had to have one myself! I’m so happy I can at long last say I own an original first print!

It’s got that old book smell, boy do I love it! The pages are quite brittle but the spine has held up pretty decent over time.

Overall, I’m so pleased to add this grail item to my collection! I’ll post more once I’m off work!

Love y’all!

Congratulations! That is an impressive find and excellent idea to conserve it.

I have a modern day english translation version. From what I have read about Richthifen, he wrote the book before his first crash, and later on during the war he said he would not have written it the same way. He was young and very confident when he wrote it, not as war weary as he became later on.

Aye thank you! Sando! I really appreciate the history there! Really shows how views can change easily.

If you're interested in imperial German aviation I'd recommend Eagles of the Black Cross by Musciano. Very good overall coverage of the air war between 1914-1918 from the German perspective. It'll also show how Richthofen, though a very talented and cunning hunter in the air, was far from the only interesting ace.

Always nice to nail down a grail item, congrats!

Recommendation: always wear white conservation gloves when handling documents and antique books. In fact handling any antiquities they should be worn, but documents especially. Oils from your fingers can permanently stain the papers and God forbid the grease from a burger or pizza eaten an hour earlier will make its mark lol.

Oooo I’ll certainly look into getting a copy! Sounds like a stellar read! Thank you for the recommendation!

Aye absolutely! I have about two pairs of white cotton gloves, if you have any other style glove recommendations I’d highly appreciate that! Been trying to find a good set for some time now.

Thank you! Really happy to add this piece and share it with y’all!

I wonder what everybody's Holy Grail items would be? I have to think about it but an FAR 10 Pickelhaube to go with my sword would be up there.

Just saw the one on Age of Kings - unfortunately out of my price range right now...as most Holy Grail items probably are for most of us.
