Can someone tell me more about this? I am completely new to this area. Planning to sell it after knowing more of it. Thanks in advance 20240907_163833.jpg20240907_163837.jpg

Agreed - most likely artillery (there were more of them) but also correct for pioneer, telegraph, aviation and other technical troops. Enlisted/NCO walking out dress cap, private purchase. Missing the sweatband, which had a tendency to come loose from wear, since sweat is salty and salt is corrosive. Ironically, the ersatz bands were more durable than the thin leather ones under heavy use (for this reason).

I suspect one or the other cockade is replaced. They worked just like pickelhaube cockades - two-piece versions for officers/senior NCOs and one piece painted versions for enlisted. Usually not mixed and matched like this. For an officer, the black band would be velvet so I am guessing the Württemberg was added to replace a missing one. Importantly, it looks mostly moth-free. A nice piece!

I would also add that it is a private purchase cap as other ranks were only permitted to wear them off duty and they were not an issue piece of kit.

Of note is the white lining and white underside to the peak which was favoured by officers and senior NCO's. The shape is the post 1910 style. The visor shape changed over the years with fashion driving it as much as regulations.

The cap material looks nice quality doeskin cloth and the cockades are mismatched. The national colours cockade is for other ranks but the state cockade is an officers.

The cap band is black cloth, correct for other ranks/nco. Officers caps had a velvet black cap band.

If you replace the top cockade to make it a nice NCO's cap.

cheers

Tony
