Who is the General?

Can someone identify the General with Kronprinz Rupprecht (shown on the right)?

Shame that Herr General's medal bar is not clearer. However, as he is wearing a Bavarian helmet plate, General Ludendorff is clearly out of the question! What is discernible is a peacetime Saxon Albrecht Order commanders' cross. That being the case, in my opinion, this officer is char. Generalleutnant a.D. Wilhelm Hopffer (1856-1926). I understand the photograph was taken in 1924. Below is a pre-war image of General Hopffer.

The angle made it hard to identify, but I agree with Glenn, his face, neck order and the medal bar look like it is Wilhelm Hopffer.

I‘m sorry, but I am really not sure that these are the same persons.

Maybe this comparison with better resolution helps to identify that guy. Unfortunately, I can't make any other suggestions. I looked at a ranking list from 1917 (1917 was the only ranking list that I’ve found near 1924 with open access) and searched the net for images of various names. But I couldn't find a match

That puts a different complexion on the issue! One can now see SWORDS on the Saxon Albrecht Order.

Or could it be that he awarded the same medal again with swords in later days?

Hi Sandy,

check out this portrait of Generalleunant a.D. August Lehmann (1864-1929). The awards certainly appear to match and specifically, note that strange button on his right breast pocket flap.

Lehmann seems to fit the bill much better, even the general facial structure and build is much more similar, this seems to be the man in question. Well done.
