Hi all, regarding the paint (varnish) that was used for brass sheets. It was usually shellac based varnish along with other natural resins and a lead based dye. This dye is not currently available. The original dye changed colour when exposed to the sun.
In the period after 1900, the varnish was applied to silver plates and had a different composition. These are gilding techniques. As you can see in the pictures three different varnishes are applied.
