-My latest. A fine M1848-1864 with the "M" monogram. The older brother of my 1871 1C "L" helmet.
-Label translation:
"-10th december 1870-, the Bavarian Cuirassier Brigade participated in the Battle of Beaugency-Cravant.
-In 1970; when clearing the château Beaugency attic; this helmet was found.-And auctioned-This helmet must have belonged to a Cuirassier that fell or was wounded during the battle and was evacuated to the lazarett at the castle's grounds. It proves that the old "M" pattern 1848-1864 helmets have been issued to reservists on mobilisation. [Collection J-L. LARCADE-1971]".

On the losses:
-1.Kürassier Regiment "Prinz Karl von Bayern": 6 December 1870: participating in the pursuit of the French troops at Beaugency: no losses.
-2.Kürassier Regiment "Prinz Adalbert von Bayern": December 1870; the Regiment participated in all combats against the Armée de la Loire; Guillonville; Orléons and Beaugency...as flanking-guard and in combing the area; the Regiment lost some men.

-Cuirassier M1842 steel helmet-the crowned "L" monogram for König Ludwig I; he abdicates March 20th 1848. His son Maximillian II; crowned "M" monogram; reigns untill he died on March 10th 1864. Succeeded by his son; under the name of Ludwig II. Again the pre 1848 crowned "L" monogram. 29th November 1878...it is decided
to abandon this beautifully piece of headgear 1st April 1879: these proud Regiments no longer bear the name "Cuirassiere". From then on these units are baptised "Schwere-Reiter-Regimenter". But that is another story. [Source: Casques à Pointe; Volume II; by Jean-Louis LARCADE.]

Very nice helmet Francis!
If my memory serves me well, you bought it from the auction of J.L. Larcade's collection?

Thank you for sharing this oustanding rare helmet. I don't know this model and your post was very interesting for me.

-The liner consists of a heavy and thick canvas fabric "bag" with a lace. Sewn to the leather sweatband. I was not happy when I noticed that the liner was suffering gravity. The poor old stitches. I love good and sturdy Belgian beers. So I grabbed one of my unemployed sturdy beer glasses.
-Cut a strip of unbleached cotton. Folded it to form a padding to put on top of the glass-thus supporting the liner. Aaargggh...making sure for 200% that the canvas bag was large enough not to cause damage to the liner there.
-The "M" Cuirassier M1848 will stay close to the J-L. LARCADE books and the rest of the reference books.

About the Bayerische Kokarde:
-"the white and blue Kokarde in brass sheet was "in Fallten geprägt". " Meaning: embossed showing a folded/folds pattern.
