Well, I'm quite upset to see this listed on eBay:
The owner contacted me last week and asked my opinion, and I told him it is a BAD fake. It is a modern replica helmet with a fake wappen. It is so bad no one will likely buy it.
His listing:
Imperial German, WW1, African Colonial Schutztruppe Modified British Pith Helmet. This is not a German Depot issued Pith Helmet. It is a captured British Pith Helmet modified with a Prussian Eagle, likely removed from a Picklehaube and attached in the field. General Paul von Littow-Vorbeck with a small multi-racial army tied up no less than 300,000 enemy troops in a gorilla war spanning Africa remaining undefeated throughout the Great War. Imperial Germany was unable to resupply his Army and he was forced to live off the land and resupply his troops by capturing Portuguese, British, French and South African supply depots for weapons, ammunition and other supplies of war. This is all documented in a wonderful book ( The African Kaiser ) that reads like an adventure story rather than an incredible history of this Army's war across the African Continent. This Pith Helmet was purchased in Europe without provenance and is being sold as such to recover my investment. This is the second such Pith Helmet that I've been able to offer, the first had provenance and found a new home a few years back.
Well, as I explained to him, the helmet is a fake. But that's a moot point because colonial pattern Home Service Helmets weren't used in WWI and the chances of one being "captured" aren't slim. It is an absolute impossibility.
I did find the part about "gorilla war" amusing at least.
