Bavarian model 1869 Werder "Lightning" pistol

This is a pretty cool pistol using the Werder breech-loading mechanism. It was nicknamed "lightning" because it could be reloaded quickly. This was one of the original issues and has a nice low serial number (150) and was issued to the 1st Bavarian Curassier Regiment 2nd Squadron. The marking was changed when the Bavarian Curassier Regiments were redesignated Schwere Reiter Regiments in 1878...it remained in the 2nd Squadron. They were eventually phased out of cavalry use when the model 1879 Reichsrevolver came into service.

These are interesting pistols, though I have yet to buy one. I do, however, have 2 Werder rifles. Both were converted in the 1870s (1872 + 1877) to the 11mm Mauser 43 cartridge.

Always had a preference for weapons, unfortunately after my WWII collection I got rid of everything, including my collection license, because weapons are very difficult to keep as an enthusiast here in that small country; I have never seen this before, beautiful piece

I had my sites on that sucker and almost pulled the trigger myself.

Really happy to see you picked it up from Larry and Terri they are really good folks. I was wondering who got it and somehow it makes it much easier to move on when you see things you wanted and missed on when they go to a good home where you know they will be taken care of, enjoyed and beautifully displayed.

Yes. You push the forward trigger forward to drop the breech block, slide a round in, pull the "hammer" back to close the breech block and get it ready to fire.

Thanks. This is the first thing I've bought from them. Stumbled on the site and found this browsing around. It was reasonably priced. One sold on gunbroker a week later for a couple hundred dollars less. It was a good experience. Have their site bookmarked!

Great looking Werder pistol. I caught the bug for this family of weapons several years ago and it hit me hard I managed to track down all the various models, but it was definitely a slog.
