New project pickle!

Howdy all, hope y’all are doing well!

So I picked up this model 1897 Haube the other day in a trade I made for a sword.

Now I’m sure the lot of you have noticed multiple flaws with this guy. The only rounded visor Bavarian officers helms belonged to the OVY.

Despite the age and dry leather it still retains its original parts. The Wappen, although original, is not proper for this style of helm (or at least that’s what I’ve found doing research)

The Prussian cockade dosen’t match the Wappen either.

I’ve since removed the Wappen to take a look, I’ve more or less confirmed the Wappen isn’t original to the helmet.

But a question now stands, what type of Wappen would be mounted on this helm?

Some friends and I have discussed possibilities and have come to two possible conclusions.

A standard Prussian 1897 or a Prussian grenadier 1897.

Here’s why we think it could possibly be a grenadier,

From what we gathered,

It could be a grenadier helmet. They switched to garde style eagles after previously having normal sized eagles. And according to some posts on the site here the garde eagle should have holes around 4 inches apart which the holes seem to be on this example.

This theory may be a bit far fetched but it’s one to consider. It’s more likely a standard Prussian 1897 but it’s hard to say.

I’d love to hear your guys thoughts on this! As well as pointers towards either a model 1897 Prussian officer Wappen and/or a model 1897 grenadier officer Wappen.

Thank you all so much!

All the best!

As far as the wappen, for officers models, since the Officers bought their own helmets from many different sources, you may find a lot of variance in the holes spacing. I would say the ghosting or the indents from the wappen is your best indicator.

The round spike base practically narrows out Bavaria. Plus, the state cockade confirms that its probably from Prussia.

I don't see the ghosting or indents where the grenadier wings would be, so I am not sure that it's that, but there isn't enough photos to tell.

These are repro, you can tell because the rounded edges are not very well done. Originals are very much near perfect. But its more than passible if you're doing reenactmentments.
Thank you so much, I assumed it was so.

Might keep em on hand if ever needed!

Thank you so much for your in depth thoughts!

Aye, I’ve more or less came to the conclusion it’s Prussian. The grenadier was only discussed cause of what some of buddies saw, of course these were only assumptions.

Looks like I’ll have a nice Bavarian Wappen for parts if need be!

P.S.

I know you and I talked about finding a focus awhile back, getting rid of the extra not so important stuff and finding a steady line. I’ve really been taking that to heart lately and have really set myself on that path.

I just wanted to say thank you for steering me in that direction sir, I really appreciate it.
