Untouched eBay find.

Proving that nice untouched helmets can still be found on eBay, is this lovely little untouched M16. With size 62 being the only size of Imperial German Steel helmet that the Gebrueder Gnuechtel A.G., Lauter i./Sa., factory produced during the Great War, the shell is quite distinguishable by its deeply stepped vent lugs. The helmet shows obvious signs of use but little post war handling, with a well used liner, and remnants of chalk around the vent lugs and leather liner band, this example display a lovely shade of light field grey paint.

The original drawstring is present, with one of the pads retaining their filling. In the rear skirt is what looks like some writing with an indelible pencil with what appears to be the number 9 perhaps for 1919? The heating lot code of R385 is quite clearly struck inside the dome with the R denoting the rolling mill factory as Stahlwerk Röchling,Volkingen.

Whenever I see these untouched examples for sale, I almost feel obligated to collect them to save them from falling into the hands of the unscrupulous and being forever ruined with a fake camo paint job, and this one turned out to be a beauty.

It looks to have a very light green paint. Liner is in a great condition with the drawstring which is very nice as well!
I always like it when the vent holes have been closed of for some reason.

Was there a lot of interest on ebay or were you able to get a good deal on it?

Yes, it’s a little different to the more regular feldgrau but I think the 5th photo is probably more representative of the true colour. I don’t think I have a single steel helmet that isn’t a slightly different colour to the other.

Like a lot of eBay photos they were dark and not very good but I downloaded them and then lightened them up and could then see it was all complete and had potential so I grabbed it. There wasn’t too much interest and it was quite cheap. I also picked up a later model S&H 60 on eBay last year which I’ll post at some point. So they are definitely still out there.

I remember seeing this one. I thought about buying it, but alas, you got it. You showed this on a FB imperial German page and I was shocked at how different the helmet looked compared to the eBay photos. Really happy to see this one again

Thanks Andy! Yes, the photos on eBay are often very poor so I download them and then lighten them so that I can see things more clearly.
