In his book "Military Headgear of Württemberg (1786-1871)," Walter Wannenwetsch meticulously examines the period from 1786 to 1871. He establishes a link between the reign of Duke Frederick II of Württemberg and that of King Charles of Württemberg.
The book is structured clearly and comprehensively, following the careers of the four sovereigns of Württemberg: Elector Frederick II (1797–1805), King Frederick (1806–1816), King William I (1816–1864), and King Charles (1864–1891). This structure provides a precise and exhaustive overview of the evolution of headgear over the centuries.
Coats of arms and emblems, cockades, hats, caps, bearskin caps, shakos, scapkas, kolpaks, light shakos, caps, service caps, camp caps, and cavalry helmets are all clearly described and illustrated.
Detailed drawings and tables identifying cockades, plumes, and coats of arms facilitate the identification of rare surviving pieces. Color lithographs complement the descriptions of the missing original hairstyles.
