What's even better is the fact that this Lubeck Cross is a wartime issue.
The crosses issued in the post-war period did not have the red beaks and claws that Dane's example show, making this one an even rarer item.
Persistence pays dividends. It's gratifying to be able to bring one of these incomplete helmets back to the way it would have looked when it was in use. Good job.
Steve:
Thanks for providing these leads regarding potential sources. I appreciate you taking the time. I have looked at Weitze and AOK occasionally, but only as a means of gauging prices. I know I could have a 109th tomorrow if I wanted one that badly.
We all have our own motivations and...
I have a Wappen for the 109th,, a shoulder strap, a songbook, some postcards and two steins to Reservists in the same company in the same year, but never found a helmet. But I have a feeling that might change.
Peter:
Any S/98 I've seen (and I have a nice Type II sawback version) in my collection will have the date of manufacture on the top of the blade close to the Quillion (cross guard) eg. mine is stamped :
W
16
I suspect yours has a similar marking?
I believe the frog was originally intended for a S98 Seitengewehr. The two top rivets are as issued, I think the two lower ones have been added post issue.
To clarify; Waffen SS helmets were not RZM marked.
M35, M40 and M42 steel helmets had the maker, size and heat lot numbers only stamped into the interior surfaces of the shell.
Sandy:
I think the top Reichskokarde is good. The edges of the serrations are well-defined.
I'm less keen on the Landeskokarde. It lacks the detail of the Reichskokarde, but that could be attributable to a die that was badly worn. The innermost ring is quite narrow, something I'm not used to...
Justin:
For anyone collecting Kaiserliche Marine items that's a Home Run!
I've been keeping an eye out for a Matrosen Division lettered Mutze which are harder to find than the Werft Division. This example is an order of magnitude beyond that.
:D
Well, I can't say she hasn't noticed. She's an accountant so she tends to notice these things.
I bought three of them locally so the prices were quite low relative to international values. "Trust me" 😉
Happy New Year to all.
Steve
I picked up four helmets this year which is a good year given that I'm not actively collecting anymore.
I'd have to say that this Bavarian Leibgarde/Pioneer OR's helmet was my favourite as the restoration is now complete with the acquisition of an original Bavarian Kokarde back in October.
Thanks for the positive comments gentlemen.
Something I failed to mention when I made this post was the fact that the helmet has G.M. Donovan 982873 written in pencil. in the interior of the shell.
Since the vendor was from upstate New York I assume that G.M. Donovan was an American...
At Brian’s request I’m posting my progress on the helmet I’m currently restoring which was originally posted in the Latest Finding section. I posted it under the heading of Prussian Zahlmeister which later was proved to be inaccurate thanks to the input of Wojtek and Glenn.
Based on the...
I'll do that tomorrow.
I'm putting the cruciform base back in place as well as the Kokarden and the chin scales. So now the only item missing is the rear spine which we'll deal with in the New Year when we're both back home.
I also re-lacquered the two areas of the shell that had flaked off...
