The first helmet is an Austrian M1917 Helmet, denoted as Austrian by the higher mounted Chin Strap mounts, it is not in its original brown paint however.
The Second Piece is a German M1918 Helmet with Camouflage. It is denoted as an M18 by the lack of lower mounted lugs for the chinstrap on the skirt. These are both decent pieces in my opinion.

Thanks for the message. My friends helmet was advertised as an SS/VT transition helmet. Would you be able to provide any confirmation?

SS helmet shells were marked RZM and SS. A black WW1 helmet is probably painted for the Fire Brigade. Rob

Is this including the ones purchased from Austria in the 30s for the early nazi party goons? I thought they just repainted and badged them with ss. Some ss were even hand painted?

Unless it’s got runes on it or is named and unit named then it’s just a repainted WW 1 helmet. There is an expert here who might chip in as SS IS not my thing.

Not the best photos but you can see the difference

To clarify; Waffen SS helmets were not RZM marked.

M35, M40 and M42 steel helmets had the maker, size and heat lot numbers only stamped into the interior surfaces of the shell.

Yes WW1 helmets and specific SS helmet shells not WW2 helmets. It’s a very complex subject . Rob
