Beautiful helmet. I have a 1842 Officer helmet that is nic-plated and compromised. Sold to me as steel but previous owner tried to remove on the bell but rusted through on the visor and tail. Any ideas on restoring the down to the steel?

Who does 'restorations' such as this? I have not seen metalhelm 'fixed' in such a way. Earlier(m1860) helmets might have a makers mark on the trim or not. Did the later (m1894) all have a inner crown makers mark/date? This bell does have some intriguing qualities I have not seen in repo's, I'm...

I'm suspect on several issues. The steel spike shape is not like any ive seen. The button on the back does not look right. The liner seems newish/odd and the sew job of the tag does not look period. As mentioned the front plate does look right for me either. A better interior pic is much needed...

Looks like a fake to me. Officer chickens are usually very detailed. My EM's seem better made and more detailed than this one. Plus the underside mounting does not look right, new or recent work>>> I say.

I just sent him a message that it is a fake. He at least responded 'thanks for the input'

I have a EM field gray that has been has been though the depot several times(marked to 3 different units over its life) and it has what must be the original stitching that is natural color much like the example shown here.
