I picked this one up today at a public auction. You can tell by the rust, wire hanger and the currently removed mud dauber wasp nests on the inside that it truly came from a barn. I didn’t get a bargain, but it is worth restoring and will be a fun project.

Use this for the outside finish, it works great! The rest of the trim, maybe a light clean would suffice. This helmet has the slightly longer spike on it, as it should be. Looking forward to the restoration too! Good luck!

Yes, I restored a brass trim JzP several years ago and used the above cold blue. Wish I had the German version, it seems more appropriate. A trick that improves the darkening effect is to pre-heat the steel to about 150F (302C). It opens up the steel grain structure allowing better chemical oxidation. Thanks !

You guys are really making me look at these poor old Helmets in a whole new light. Really GREAT WORK.

I recently saw a video of an experienced gunsmith bluing gun parts, and I'm going to modify my bluing method for any future JzP restorations. The parts turned out really nice, and the finish looked very similar to the original JzP finishes.

The video was on youtube, and the gentleman worked for Midway.
