Caterpillar Helmet

Great question, and it is one I ask myself as well. I have many and love them, but reselling them can be tough.

I think a lot of it is collectors do not know a lot about them as there is not much in books about them... the only book that I know of that go's into depth on them is the Bavarian helmet book by Seibold which is only in German and can be hard to find

James

It all depends on what you like. Personally, being half Bavarian I totally love them and have a few in my collection. I would love to have more but most of the ones I see are put together junk. IMO.

When collecting Pickelhaubes obviously Raupenhelms are a totally different style of Helmet.

Great book mentioned by James IMO it's the Bavarian Helmet Bible and just as indispensable. (y)

I have a few of these helmets in my collection and they are certainly beautiful, but can they compare in such diversity to the Pickelhaube? I think it is simply impossible to collect all the Pickelhaube by variety, even if you really wanted to. Unless you take all the types, of course.

Difficult to find with the original Raup I have the one and love it. Rob

I totally agree Rob It's very hard to find complete original pieces no doubt about it.

I'm always looking and sadly most of the ones I see for sale are made from old fire helmets I've even seen them sell where you can still see the old lines in the leather from where the comb was on the firemen's helmet.

Another big problem with the officer helmets is insects if not properly taken care of the bear skins will soon be bald.

Very nice example. As a relative beginner I can't comment as to why they are not more popular but I've always wanted to add an example to my collection.
