Note the bubbling on the reverse.

I could use the star as I have a neusilber Garde officer in my collection which is missing one! My cost estimate for an original would be $700-800 US. The screw posts, nuts etc are also obviously new. (n) (n)

Sure, Brian, but the Garde star bears the typical signature of fakes: absence of horizontal stripes on SUUM CUIQUE letters. There are also blobs of metal on the Q and E, and red fruits next to green leaves are missing... I am sure your nice helmet deserves better. Only my opinion though...

Thank you for bringing this reproduction to our attention.
One might have doubts about the front, but absolutely none about the back. Authentic helmets are stamped from a sheet of brass, so the details on the obverse are the same as those on the reverse.
Here, the eagle is correct on the front, but it's clear that the metal is cast on the reverse. The details are "soft and blurry," and there are small lumps here and there. The finish is grainy.

For several years now, I haven't bought a "rare" officer's helmet unless I can see the back of the plate. And I sleep very well at night.

That's why we have this forum, it's good that there are still good enthusiasts here who can explain things a bit, I would say we are learning.
