Seems the whole Museum collection is kept under an absoluut minimum of light.

So: the pics are not really great....

Many of the government run museums are woke. I've been to some twice (Suhl, Sömmerda, etc.) and the 2nd time was disappointing.

Koblenz seems pretty good after all these years.

What museums in Germany are "must visit"?
Which would you recommend?
End of 19th-Great War.
Apart from Koblenz; Rastatt; Ingolstadt...of course.
Thank you,
Francis

I visited the Dresden Museum in 1999 and 2017 . It had indeed lost something that made it special but the cafeteria was better.

I had ticked "like" instead of "reply" by mistake. I totally missed the point about "woke scientists", sorry.... what happened?
Same question - what does "woke" mean in this context? On this side of the pond, it's been overused to the point of being synonymous with "I don't like it" these days. Thanks! (And these are marvelous threads Francis - I really appreciate your pictures)

From a purely artifact exhibit point of view, this display stinks. I would ask the curator flat out why all the display cabinets are off, dark or dimly lit. I guess if their lighting system is being replaced they may have some sort of excuse. However, look at the exploding shell exhibit. That center spot light in the middle of the shell burst is working just fine. If this was an art museum I can understand why a curator may use lighting to evoke emotion or shape a narrative. In a historical museum, I personally like as much light as possible to examine the objects. I would prefer the curator just provide the facts and keep their narrative/opinions to themselves. I can draw my own conclusions.

100% agree, unless there is a concern with light causing damage (which I can't see as a problem with artificial light or with pickelhauben in general). The darkness of the helmet wall is clearly suboptimal.

In other news: Is that totenkopf saddle cloth embroidered with cowrie shells?? What a spectacular display, despite being super dark.

Correct! In general. Everywhere. And yes. That saddle cloth. Great!
