Does anybody have a picture of Friedrich v. Merkatz? He is the machine gun guy.

Merkatz is very well known as MG expert and author of several books on machineguns, but I have never seen any picture. I hope to find some “Reservistenbilder” of the 2nd Guards Machine Gun Detachment, where he served as lieutenant / 1st lieutenant between 1909 and 1913 before he took command of the 1st MG Detachment. Does this help at all?

I do not immediately have a portrait of Colonel v. Merkatz. However, I note that the ZMSBw in Potsdam holds a copy of:
"Geschichte der Maschinen-Gewehr-Abteilung Nr 1 : nach d. amtl. Kriegstagebüchern u. dem vom Reichsarchiv hrsg. 'Der Weltkrieg' u. privaten Aufzeichnungen der Kameraden", (1936) by the said Herr v. Merkatz. I can check if it contains a portrait in early March if one does not turn up before then.

I do not believe so. The guy wrote a series of books but no picture that I am aware of. One of the works that is in progress for the Austrian publisher is on machine gun troops . The intent is to include a picture of this guy. No I am not the author. But thank you As usual!
