Garde Du Corps NCO tunic

I have one on my GGR# 3 Waffenrock
but I will need help from another family member to hold the strap up
so that I can try to shoot a photo of the button for you
This was a private purchase Waffenrock that was tailor made View attachment 44600

Very nice! I only have one uniform that can support a lanyard but it has a small hook instead of a button and I'm guessing by the size of the threads it was definitely a button. Would you happen to have any idea as to why there would be buttons on both sides? There are threads on the outer edge of the shoulder on both sides which appear to have accommodated a button.

The Cavalry wore the shooting cord on a different side
from the Infantry

Since it is a private purchase
the shoulder straps do NOT have the regular button holes
so it is not possible for me to raise the strap to take photo
But I can tell you by me feeling under the strap
the button is NOT a metal one
Just a regular horn button
not seen when the strap is in the proper place .

Would anyone by chance have an appropriate marksmanship lanyard button that goes under the shoulder boards as well as the shoulder board buttons? I'm looking for ones marked extra fein without the assman "A" on them.

I have finally decided to jump into replacing these, while removing the remnants of the old shoulder boards I see they are constructed differently, they do not have a blue backing like the ones I was able to source and the original boards were also wider than these.

I'm blown away any photos to share of how you did this, I can't see any stitches, and it looks really tight.

Like already it mentioned turned out great. (y)(y)

I unfortunately did not take any photos while I was in the process of sewing them in but once I removed the remnants of the old shoulder boards I carefully cut one section of the thread that was holding the lining in place and unthreaded it so I could rethread it back in and exposed the inner shoulder section of the uniform. Then I sandwiched the outer material, shoulder board and then inner material of the uniform and made sure I was threading the needle through the old stitch holes of the uniform and boards. Once I knew they were tight and you couldnt see any threads I restitched the lining back into place using as much of yhe original thread as I could salvage and a little bit of new thread.

I have a question for some of the GDC and medal bar enthusiasts of the forum, I am trying to hunt down a proper 3/4 place bar for this uniform and is am assuming that as a member of the GDC would not have been sent over to the colonial theatre and would not be eligible for the China campaign award or the African campaigns. Assuming this uniform is pre/wartime it is proving hard to find a decent NCO level award bar for it. It'd be nice if a photo from the 2nd Esk. existed but I do not think one is out there.

While one cannot say it's impossible I would say it's highly improbable that your GdC NCO served in the Imperial Army, Navy or Seebataillon Regiments and then transferred to the GdC.

See China campaign medals in use here:

I would say the owner of your waffenrock wore his dunkelblau uniform to his wedding post WW1 and added a medal bar for the photos.

I say this because the waffenrock is in excellent shape and doe not appear to be of 1870 vintage which would have entitled the owner to wear a Franco Prussian Medal and a 100 year medal. They also placed the medals higher up on the chest as in this photo:

I have a couple of these types of uniforms and have gotten several over the years that had unit commemoration, anniversary and veteran association medals and ribbons on them.

It's just a suggestion on another possible way to decorate your nice tunic and it would most likely be much easier and cheaper.

As mentioned, some had very long lives. I guess it all depends on what stage of its life you would like to try and portray. (y)

I guess i hadn't considered that, my original idea was to try and find a bar that had some combination of a merit medal, life saving medal, Centennial medal, lower length service award.
