Bonjour,
Merci d'avoir partagé cette magnifique collection. Je me joins à vous avec mes deux casques de la GKR, l'un datant de la guerre franco-prussienne de 1870 et l'autre de la Première Guerre mondiale.

I can't find any maker's marks on the back plate, though it is possible that they are under the shoulder straps. I have an 1814 steel kurass and that also does not have a visible makers mark on the back plate. Dobbelaer on the front plate. Here are a couple photos comparing the 1814 line and guard back plates. Very similar.IMG_6985_50.jpgIMG_6987_50.jpgIMG_6988_50.jpgIMG_6994_50.jpg

Here is an 1814 line versus an 1845 guard front plate. The main differences are that the 1845 has the stichblatt and the studs for the shoulder straps are lower. The 1814 back plate shoulder straps fit the 1814 front plate nicely (they are a bit too short to reach the studs on the 1845)IMG_7022_50.jpgIMG_7025_25.jpg

Because of the lack of stichblatt, I think the back plate may be a captured French piece. It is a bit smaller than the front plate so not a matched set. On the left side there are some markings. What looks like 4 capital I’s and what looks like AP. Unit marked GKR 3 E on the skirt. Both front and back plate have a small ink stamp on the lining. I can’t quite make out the first line ( ends with direktor).

The guard cuirass is even harder to find than the parade helmet with the eagle. :(

May I ask one more question? Aren't the straps too short—or, as I understand it, do the two parts of the cuirass overlap, making the straps long enough?

Yes, they are too short. This is because the back piece is from an older captured French model 1814 and the front is a Prussian model 1845. The placement of the studs to attach the straps was different for the 2 models. On the 1814 they were higher up so the straps were a bit shorter.

How did the cuirassiers wear the cuirass—with the shorter straps?

I also have the same cuirass, and it, too, has the shorter straps.

Are there any markings on the 2 pieces? You may have the same issue I have, where the 2 pieces don't match. On mine, the front plate has Prussian stamps and the back plate has French

My cuirass features an inner lining on both sides bearing the same owner's name—meaning that he wore the cuirass with the shorter straps.
