Helmet Plate

Found this helmet plate while cleaning out my mom’s house.
My Great Grandfather served in the Prussian/ Imperial German Army prior to immigrating to the U.S.
Could this be part of his uniform helmet... As a kid I kinda remember it being in front of an eagle on a spiked helmet..

It is definitely U.S. "E Pluribus Unum" gives it away.
Unfortunately I have no idea what this would be used for.
How large is it?

Interesting. Symbols representing both Artillery and Infantry. Possibly a militia shako plate?

I would guess it to be from the 1880's.
