Hi team

I am hoping those more knowledgeable about this type of helmet can confirm the model type and that it is all original and any other information applicable (despite condition, missing liner etc).

Thanks in advance!

What can you guys tell me about this Wappen on my M53/60 (my guess)? I always though the mounting bolts were interesting.
It seems to be a helmet eagle that was replaced in 1860, because it already has an integrated fatherlands banner. Not only the stealth pins are really wonderful pieces of art, the tail feathers are also special. Even though I think it is an old helmet eagle design with the height of an M1842 (~13,0 cm), the tail feathers at the base already have a design similar to an M1871. However, due to its proportions, the helmet eagle appears narrower than an M1871; the wings appear to point more steeply upwards and the narrower body makes the eagle look more elegant in my eyes.

Thanks Sandy. This is an old photo with my first 2 1870 EKIs. I can start another thread, so I don't further hijack Mike's thread, and post better photos of the Wappen if you want.

Hello Willi,
As Sandy said, this is the first time I've seen such an eagle. It's an M71 (vVv tail) for infantry (abdomen feathers vertical, not V-shaped) but with worked head screws like on the M42s.
I---Here's the eagle this helmet should have, if it still has the screw heads modified in 1862.

2---Here's the November 1860 eagle for the Cuirassiers:
iIi tail feathers and V-shaped belly feathers. This M60 model is the same design for both infantry and cuirassiers. However, it remained for cuirassiers until the M15 model in gray iron, while in 1867-71 the infantry was given a new eagle.

3---And here's the M67 or 71 infantry eagle with vertical belly feathers and vVv tail feathers.

The part circled in blue doesn't fit because it doesn't correspond to the cuirassier eagle model.
In addition, I've never seen such an eagle on the Vaterland-Bandeau.
A trial eagle??? not adopted?

Hello Nzef1940,
Your M53/M62 helmet is flawless, apart from the missing cap. It received the split-head screws in 1862, and is fitted with the M42 eagle, modified in May 1860 by the addition of the Vaterland-Bandeau. It didn't have the M67 reinforcements, i.e. the brass snap ring at the top of the visor doesn't join the one on the lobster tail.

Cool! I’ve never seen Bandeau bolts like that before. To the very fortunate Metalhelm buyer in NZ, resist the urge to pick up any Metalhelm by the spike. It’s just a tiny bead of very old solder keeping that together.

I still think it’s a design of a late M1842 eagle and I‘ve seen others like that before on a EM Landwehr helmet M1842. I also made a thread for variations M1842 helmet eagles back then and compared the eagles with photos side by side:

PS: I think it is ok to hijack this thread, because nzef1940 has another thread to the same helmet

Thanks Sandy!

I've been away at the OVMS show, but here are some photos of the helmet I had in my file.
