I need help with the tshapka.

I have this Uhlan shawl.

The front visor appears to be made of leather, or covered in leather.

Has anyone ever seen this version before?

A new layer of leather has also been added to the inside for reinforcement. The old leather is still visible in the background. Should I remove the new leather? Or is it a reproduction?

Other collectors are also stumped.

I would be grateful for any advice.

It looks like grades "bonded leather" or "genuine leather" was used to cover existing parts. These grades of leather are lower quality and are typically stamped to produce a textured effect. Sometimes, they are processed with plastic to make it stronger. Looks to be both for the visor and mortar.

I would think the type of glue they use is the biggest factor. Shoe glues or epoxys are not coming off. I would start at the mortar mount inside and test in a small area. I suspect these are part of the helmet now.
