With ersatz helmets, along with felt, metal sheet was used to replace the scarce leather,
to replace metal sheet with felt is weird. [-(

Absolutely! Especially when they were using metal as a replacement for the leather helmets!

Let me be the devil's advocate here and look at it from a camouflage perspective. What if they were seeking to replace the metal+uberzug combination with a more efficient already green helmet? Just thinking out loud here... Pretty sure this is a fake as otherwise it wouldn't be the only specimen out there no matter how rare...

In fact this is more or less what they did with this Versuchshelm circa 1905. It was a regular leather Pickelhaube covered with felt, hence probably more expensive to produce. The reason for this extra layer has been elusive, but camouflage has been frequently evoked. Good point Ron.

 
The poor construction of the metal parts says it all this is not German quality this helmet is screaming i am fake.

Again, I see more red flags to this helmet--the main one being the fact it's a loner as mentioned--but going back to the camo issue, the shiny brass wappen could easily be removed in the field same as spikes...

But not the rim ,that thing can be spotted from miles in the sun.
I have period pictures with felt helmets using a cover over it. In fact my avatar is such a helmet.
 
This helme was for sale at the SOS and was discussed here previously. The owner/seller is a member and naturally defended the originality of the helmet. I could not imagine how long it took to make this and the skill level involved. However, because it is so off the wall and one of a kind even if I had the money, I would not buy it. You would have to be constantly defending its originality.
 
I look at the work involved to make this...shaping the felt, stitching it together and the liner looks good. However, here we go again discussing it. Too many questions. It all just makes me wonder???
 
So all the millions of Ersatz felt Pickelhaubes were for camouflage? Even though a helmet cover was mandatory on all helmets? :-"

I handled this at the SOS and it is so bizzare, some people actually have convinced themselves its real.
