Hi,
I'm sending you pictures of my first German helmet from WW1 that I just got. My dream was to get a camouflage helmet, but this helmet was at a good price and looks original. I ask the experts here to confirm the originality of the helmet. Thank you very much

Hi,
Congratulations, looks good to me, even though I'm no expert.
Original shell with a lot of original colour remaining, 1917 steel ring liner with the correct cream-coloured chrome leather pads, held in place by the correct split pins (is the one at the back thicker than the other ones? hard to see on the pictures), with the correct markings.
I think you did well.
The camo helmets are a minefield, with more fakes than originals on the market, this one at least looks like an honest and typical example.
Regards,
Lars

Hello sir. I agree. It’s an honest helmet. It’s not the nicest looking one, but 100 years of wear and dings will do that. It’s an excellent first ww1 German helmet to collect. I also do want to caution you on any camouflaged helmets you’ll come across as fakes are plenty. If you ever have any questions on them, be sure to run them by with us or other collectors forums and groups.

Thank you very much for the comments. I'm glad I got this helmet. I'll send more photos when the helmet arrives, I don't have it in my hands yet. I bought a nice reproduction of the ersatz chinstrap for the helmet. Yes, I know that many camouflage helmets are fake, at least I'm sure about this helmet.

This ersatz chinstrap doesn't go hand in hand with the helmet. It shd be leather not fabric chinstrap though occasionally they have the fabric ones

Thanks for the info Amybellars,

but it is only a reproduction and this cloth chinstrap is nicely aged.
The reproductions of the leather chinstrap that are sold here look very new and would look ugly on my helmet.
An original chinstraps are very hard to find and very expensive.

It is true that all the helmets I have seen had a leather chinstrap. But I have read that ersatz cloth chinstraps were sometimes used.

Does anyone have a photo of a helmet with an original ersatz cloth chinstrap?

Nice helmet in fine condition, real camos are not tricky to find and generally the fakes are a bit off but there good ones out there. Rob

Yes, I do but I don't have the pic here as I am now in Paris.

When I get back Singapore, I will take pics for u.

Hi Lars13,

The helmet arrived today, so I'm sending a photo of the rear split pin. Yes, it's wider.
I thought it was an M16 helmet, but it's probably an M17 helmet, because it has a steel ring line.

Hello,

Can you say what that extra piece is in the back of the liner?

Is the steel split or has someone put an extra piece of leather or something to hold it on place or reinforce it. Looks a bit strange never seen anything like it. MFG John Josef
