M95 Prussian Guard Enlisted Helmet

I found this a couple of days ago in an antique shop. I also purchased a M15 Prussian Ulan Tschapka with a yellow rabatte, from the same source, which I will post in a separate thread.

I'm guessing that this is a private purchase "extra" helmet, since the underside of the back visor has the nice finish to it and there are no kammerstempel markings visible.

I was out visiting antique shops and not seeing any military items. I asked the owners if they knew of any antique shops that had military items, and they told me about the shop in a neighboring town that had this helmet, and the ulan tschapka.

A nice story. The absence of grommets on holes where the plate is affixed is also frequently seen on an Extra-Helm, together with shell leather being slightly thinner than on a regular enlisted helmet. I do not know if it is the case here.

Believe it or not, we don't have antiques shops in singapore. Here anything that is 10 years old is considered antiques.
We used (now permanently shut) to have a daily flea market where I found a good fake Ww2 Diving helmet which I bought it and sold for a profit.
 
Very cool helmet, militaria is always the last thing to be found at Antique shops, except for the odd button or common medal. I think it just goes straight to ebay. Rob

Very nice (y) helmet, M95 standard. I'm hesitating between an "Eigentum" (a type of helmet) because everything else is "Kammer" standard. It had M95 eyelets, but these have been removed, and a small cutout was made with a Kutter (a type of knife), I don't know why, because the Garde-Adler (a type of helmet) fasteners fit into the two large 8mm holes of the old eyelets. (The M71 and Eigentum M95, screw-type screws do not have eyelets, and just have 2 small 3mm holes.)

--The Garde-Adler is an M71/91, again with a screw-nut fastening.

--This helmet was delivered in M95 with two eyelets and an eagle with leather brackets and corners.

--This helmet was modified by removing the eyelets and replacing them with the screw-on eagle.

The roundels are indeed for a Portepee .

Yes, Eigentum is what I called Extra-Helm. It is true that the helmet has most features of a "Kammer" example. I am not sure that grommets were ever present though. Perhaps Alan can tell us what it looks like from inside.

Hello Bruno,
a trained eye can make out the mark around the 8mm hole (see the red arrow). This mark is visible from both sides. These holes were punched and are perfectly round, unlike the larger enlargements made with a cutter.

Hi Clovis,
Yes, I had seen those prints of course. I am still not convinced those are from grommets. Pictures of the inside should tell.

Hi Bruno,

Only the eyelet holes are 8-9mm in diameter to allow the leather wedge to be inserted. For the screw and nut (Officier, Extra-Helm-Eigentum), the hole is always 3-4mm, and there's never any trace of the eyelet's collar being hammered. I have no doubt about that.

Even the reproductions have the correct drilling.

In these cases, through repeated handling, the screw acts like a rasp, and the round hole initially develops nicks at the edge. This is not the case when the eyelets are gone; the hole punched remains very clean, with the small circular mark of the old eyelet.
