Here is my 2nd Stahlblech helmet. In contrast to my other example, this one is a commonly found variant, and unlike the other helmet, it's lined in felt only in a small section underneath the leather liner.
The Wappen is attached to the helmet with two loops and leather strips inserted into rectangular openings in the shell. The brass fixtures appear to me to be chemically darkened .
Finally, some comparison shots of this helmet and the other Stahlblech example. The difference in condition between the two chinstraps is a good demonstration of the damage that treating leather with neatsfoot/mink oil can do over time vs leaving old leather alone.
Great examples and the side by side comparison of the different variants of the Stahlbech. Several manufacturers were involved in the production of these ersatz variants, each having their own unique design.
