1871 pattern officers helmet of the Royal Horse Guards, with the skull in silver and the helmet plate in gilt surmounted by the ER II pattern crown, a wreath of laurel leaves to the right hand side, oak leaves to the left and the figure of St George on horseback slaying a dragon at the bottom. Within the wreath is the representation of the 'Collar of the Order of the Garter' consisting of eleven pierced discs which join with the base of the crown on either side. To the centre a silver Garter star and an oval gilt Garter having rope pattern inner and outer edges, pierced with the 'Moto of the Order of the Garter' (Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense) and backed by blue translucent enamel. To the centre is the Cross of St George in red translucent enamel with the field of the cross in silver.

This pattern of helmet remains in wear to this day although the style of crown will be changed to that of King Charles III.

Such a beautiful helmet, Jamie.
Here’s my Royal Horseguards helmets. Four officers and one trooper. One with the yak hair plume. The last one is the 1842 model.

Hi Thomas,

Many thanks for posting these! They are outstanding examples, a great collection - it's especially interesting to see an 1842 helmet!

Cheers,

Jamie
