My friend was guessing that it's possibly a mourning band? Although I've never seen one on a hat before.P.S. The reichkokarde is missed or the cap is until 1897. The black velvet band is to learn.
It reminds me of a maneuver bandThis schirmmutze of my collection gone with the same black band. It appears to be a saxonian infantry officer with red band and piping. With the black band applied it appears as a saxonian artillery officer. Until now I had thought of an officer who had changed unit from infantry to artilley.
