The helmet looks like a British Wolseley but we know various other nations used similar patterns. I'm going to say Australian based on the equipment. Probably World War I, but hard to say. I'm thinking probably Palestine Front. There were no horses at Gallipoli, and the short sleeves indicate a warm climate.

That's my thought.

Now I think it is earlier. Possibly Boer War and the soldiers are British Yeomanry. Some wore sun helmets, some wore slouch hats. The rifle could be a Lee Metford so that would make sense if this was Africa. Possibly Boer War or interwar era.

It looks to me that his weapon is a Ross rifle, which would make be believe he is Canadian (ay).

The Canadians used the Wolseley helmet as well, and the "Stetson" version of the slouch hat - so Canadian seems like a good thought too.

It is really hard to see in these photos. It appears to me that the badge on the sun helmet and the shoulder title are two letters. The last letter is an "H", the first letter maybe an an "L" or an "I". I've tried matching what I can make out of the cap badge with the titles and no luck. Thought I may have had it with Irish Horse, but there were two regiments a North and a South. Badges, however, don't appear to match up.
The UK did purchase Ross rifles early in the war, but do not know who they were issued to.
I just noticed there are at least two troopers with slouch hats in the photo. Some of the Yeoman Regiments did have these as well as the ANZAC units.
