UNITED STATES IMPORT EXPORT DEVELOPMENTS

weird Doug, I just got a package from Brian(helmet) and it only took around 5 days from Canada and no fees. Have received several packages from France and Germany lately with no fees and very fast delivery?

the whole custom code that needs to now be added is not new in the USA been doing that for a while, even before Trump.

Hopefully the dust will settle and get back to normal.

Yes it is. I think the various couriers and postal outlets up here are all mixed up and getting misinformation. And with the pending Canada Post strike it’s a strange time to be shipping to the USA. I’ve tons of experience with import / export as it was a huge part of one of my businesses and as you say there’s always been the same rules in place. The only thing that’s changed are the taxable threshold and tariff/duty amounts.

I had one item from german ebay refunded to recently during the 2-3 week shipping stoppage. So far I have been splitting tarrif fees with a vineyard for my wines I import from Italy...

"Sending to the U.S.?
As of August 29, 2025, the United States requires all packages entering the U.S. to have duties prepaid. To complete payment and declaration, use the Zonos app to pay duties before heading to the post office"

Sending a box to a friend in Florida this morning via Canada Post (nothing urgent so if they go on strike it can wait) and saw this while doing the US Customs Declaration. So this might answer a lot of questions and with duties requiring prepayment no wonder DHL and the postal services stopped shipments to the US.

You'd think the US Government would publish something so that individuals can simply go to a website and see what the export to US requirements are now.

Edit - Did the Zonos app thing and quite easy, register and then entire your item you are exporting to the US. A few questions, pay the duty if any, and you get a QR code emailed to you plus one in the app. I printed the QR code and along with the Canada Post QR code for the US Customs declaration went to the post office and easy peasy. They scanned the QR codes (the printed one from Zonos didnt work but the QR code in my app worked no problem), weighed and measured the package and off she went. BTW there as no duty, they were a couple of hat stands from Skip Greenwade I no longer use now that I have moved into the new house and gave them to a fellow collector down in Florida.

So sending via Canada Post seems quite simple but duty has to be prepaid before they will accept the item to the USA. I would think this system will be setup for Europe as well shortly.

Sending via courier was completely different, UPS wanted Tax ID codes for the receivers which was their SSN number before they would accept the parcels.

Seems strange there would be 2 different processes in place for the same thing.

This whole import export business is rather annoying. The company Schusters.ru that makes reenacting uniforms will not ship anything to the U.S. at the moment.

As I’m trying to shift gears into reenacting it’s made it very hard to do so as the uniform is rather essential to the whole thing.

I hope this mess gets sorted out soon!

They are from Russia?

To my American collector friends
Here the reply I got when I asked Stauffer auction about shipping to the USA
Would this be the same for Kube ?

Hello Steve,

yes we sent you a catalog but even in Germany it arrived only yesterday. Shipping to USA is difficult. We ship only with DHL international and they stopped shipment to USA. So if you want to buy something you have to organize the shipment completely yourself, after the auction we have no time to do custom clearance etc. Or you have an address in Europe where we can ship to, that would be the easiest way….

Mit freundlichen Grüssen

Some good news

DHL Parcel resumes international shipping from Germany to the US for business customers

Business customers will be able to use DHL Parcel International for shipping from Germany to the USA again from September 25, after four weeks of suspension due to new legal regulations.

The Post & Parcel Germany division of DL Group says it is one of the first postal and parcel services worldwide to resume this type of shipping.

lg.php

This has been made possible by the Postal Delivered Duty Paid (PDDP) service, which DHL previously offered only for goods shipping to Norway, the UK and Switzerland, but will now be extended to the USA.

Furthermore, DHL says it has overhauled the process of data collection, customs reporting and payment of applicable customs fees to comply with the new customs regulations outlined in the US government’s Suspending Duty-Free De Minimis Treatment for all Countries executive order. This came into effect on August 29, 2025, and includes the removal of the previous duty-free threshold for goods valued up to US$800.

Additionally, new processes required by US authorities for postal shipping are being introduced, which differ from the previously applicable regulations. Due to some unresolved questions, all major postal companies worldwide, including Deutsche Post/DHL, were forced to temporarily suspend postal goods shipping to the USA.

To me , we collectors are not a business?
Do I understand this wrong ?

The $800 threshold is gone effective Aug 29, the US charges duty now on all shipments and it has to be prepaid before it ships. You can prepay duty via an app called Zonos Prepay at least for Canada. Shipped Danes cap and some helmet stands as a gift for a friend in Florida via UPS and duty was charged post shipment in both cases. It’s a high duty as well - 25-30-%! Plus UPS charges $24 brokerage fees.

I’d advise my US friends to check their duty charges out before buying now. It can get expensive.

My experience this week with Zoros:
Returning 2 helmets to a customer in SC, USA. Had to pay $19.42 in duty prior to going to post. Clerk could not verify address but put Zoros payment on hold until end of day. I email customer asking if address is correct…..address is correct but this residence is newly constructed in a new area. However, I lose the first duty money. I take another photo for Zoros today, duty now changes to $3.82. ?? However, helmets mailed successfully. The big surprise for me is that I have to pay the duty up front and then inform the customer. WTF? How is this going to work for an auction house with hundreds of items or a small militaria dealer selling to the US? I am gaining a new understanding of the phrase “Tariff wall”!

Yeah my gifted 10 helmet stands to my friend wound up costing me over $200 Cdn in fees, duty (tariffs) and shipping costs. Sadly I think my days of shipping to the US are over until this gets sorted out. Add in the overhanging threat of a Canadian postal strike and it’s become a total shit show.
